Never Too Early

Looking forward to the 50th Anniversary another Successful Year

For those of you who shop early for the holidays, and give and receive books as gifts, it’s time to remind all your friends, relatives and neighbors to empty those shelves and clean out the toy boxes to get ready for a new year of reading. And the AAUW-Bethlehem Book Fair team will be happy to take those books off their hands.

A quick email to everyone in your address book or just cut, paste and forward this page of the newsletter can make the request. If you are not able to store the books over the winter, call or email us and we will find a warm home for them until March.

We are working behind the scenes to assist our captains and sorters with new and improved signs for the sorting table. We want to make sorting fun and uncomplicated.

Book Fair always welcomes new volunteers.

 BOOK SALE NEWS

Fall is here and new calendars are arriving in the mail every day or being distributed by your local pharmacy, hairdresser and nail salon.   I thought this would be a great opportunity to pick some dates for next year’s meetings. We can get them on our personal calendars early and not miss anything, especially the celebration breakfast and lunch,  which you so richly deserve.

We had a record number of books last year and because of our final disposal method of the leftover books, we are receiving residual income.  We will give you the final tally March 1 and clear the books for the next sale at that time.  It has been a significant amount and we will use the same method next year to further increase our revenue.

We hope all our new members and our newly retired members who have not had an opportunity to work at the book sale will find time to join us this year. Please call us for information and we will  answer all your questions and show you the ropes.

2011 Big Year -- Big Book Fair

I hope by now the good news has spread that the proceeds from the sale were $33,000. This means we will be able to keep up our level of giving to the outstanding and deserving women and girls in our community though our scholarship program.

No amount of words can express our appreciation to Book Fair workers for the countless hours spent in sorting, truck and van trips to the storage locker and grocers for boxes, pricing, sign making, selling, treat baking, publicity, money counting and moral support. There are many other behind the scenes tasks that we often forget, but they are no less valuable to the success of the Book Fair.

A wise person once said “If nothing ever changed, there would be no butterflies.” We made some changes and the volunteers embraced them and made them work to our advantage. These suggestions for change made by the committee were meant to enhance the shopping experience and increase sales.

For those of you who missed volunteering or shopping this year, we welcome you to experience both in 2012. I look forward to my second year as chair and happily announce the addition of a co-chair, Mary Anne Mitrisin.

Thanks to Board, branch, spouses and community volunteers for all their support.

Our Legacy at the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation

The Lehigh Valley Community Foundation (LVCF) was founded by Rolland Adams, publisher of the Globe Times Newspaper, in 1967 as a philanthropic gesture, from a variety of restricted and unrestricted charitable gifts, to benefit the organizations and people of the Lehigh Valley.

Using a portion of Book Fair proceeds, the Bethlehem Branch, AAUW contributed a cash donation of $10,000 to the LVCF in 2003 to establish the Bethlehem AAUW Fund.  This money, along with subsequent contributions, accrues a substantial income fund investment activity annually.  A modest management fee for our account is only .075%.

With the branch's most recent 2005 contribution, our Bethlehem AAUW Fund is now in excess of $19,ooo and growing!  The income from our fund will be used in the future to replace the annual scholarship award from the Bertha Voit Weinland Fund which is scheduled to cease in 2008 as per the terms of the late Mrs. Weinland's will.

Our Bethlehem AAUW Fund at the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation is a marvelous way for our members to make tax-free donations (in any amount) to honor AAUW colleagues and friends or relatives for special events as well as for memorial gifts.  For additional information contact Treasurer Myra Jones 610/865-3419 or Linda Robertson at 610/865-2087.
