President's Message

A highlight of the last tow years for me has been serving as your President.  Thank you for your confidence and for the opportunity to grow closer to you as AAUW evolves in the 21st century.  A superlative Board made my tenure thoroughly pleasurable.  Thanks to each and everyone of you who served with me.

One major stride of which I am proud is the way so many of you have embraced Let's Read Math, a mission-based program that will contribute immeasurably to our local community.  This initiative is possible through the enthusiasm of former educators in our Branch who have stepped into leadership roles.  They are Fran Bentkowski, Darlene Borst, Myra Jones, Judy Lappen, Sue Matheson, and Louise Wisser.  Another exciting dimension of the program is that Allentown AAUW members are working side by side with us.

One reason that 2006-2008 seemed to be the right time to accept the Presidency is that my mother held the same position exactly 50 years previously!  This fact led me to peruse the archive of yearbooks from those earlier years.  What are some of the differences from that era to now?  Over 400 members. Christmas Chocolate for college students.  Leadership of the Children's Theatre Board.  Six literature study groups.  Annual Dinner in May.  Creative Writing and Choral Singing groups.  General meetings held 9 months a year.

In my opinion these are superficial differences only.  Our caring for community, interest in promoting education, warm hearts, seeking of lifelong learning, and friendships garnered are the same as our predecessors.  Bethlehem AAUW will continue to thrive under the guidance of my capable successor, Susan McNamara.

                                                                                                                  With much fondness,

                                                   Cinda Jensen
